Getting to St Arnaud / Nelson Lakes
Nelson and Blenheim are the closest domestic airports (both 1 hour 20 minutes drive from St Arnaud). Nelson is likely more convenient than Blenheim, given that it is nearer other canyons in the Top of the South.
Christchurch is the closest international airport (4 hours 30 minutes drive from St Arnaud).
It is recommended to hire your own car for the duration of your visit. While there are transport options available (including Nelson Lakes Shuttles), they are not especially convenient and you will need a car to access many of the canyons.
Transport to the canyons and events
All participants must organize their own car transport for duration of the festival. The festival organizers will not be providing any transport. You may be able to join a car pool when you get here, but a better plan is to join the festival Facebook event page to connect with other participants to arrange a car pool ahead of time.
The majority of the hosted canyoning trips and workshops will be held within an hours drive. There are other canyons in the Abel Tasman National Park (2 hours drive) and on the West Coast (up to 3 hours drive) which you may want to do after or before the festival.
Some of the canyons are at the head of Lake Rotoiti and are only accessible by boat. Rotoiti Water Taxis will provide return trips for a discounted price of approximately $40pp. This is not included in your festival registration. Times and prices will be confirmed closer to the time, advance bookings will not be necessary. The water taxi takes cash, eftpos, and credit card (5% surcharge).
There is petrol in St Arnaud, although beware that it is closed in the evenings.
