2nd-hand gear sale @ top lodge morning brief

Got any bits of gear that you just don’t use any more?  Bring them along to sell at the festival!

Bring your gear to top lodge to the morning briefings, starting Saturday morning.  We will have sticky labels so you can write the price, your name and phone number.  Its up to you if you are willing to leave your gear for sale in the lodge during the day.

T’s & C’s

  • Buyers responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the buyer to determine if any safety-related gear is suitable to use.  If in doubt, ask around; there will be dozens of highly experienced canyoners who can offer an opinion. If they aren’t sure, then just don’t buy it..
  • Sellers responsibilities. Sellers take responsibility for the security of any gear which is offered for sale. NZCA nor the venue take any responsibility for any gear which goes missing.
  • Koha. In the spirit of fundraising for the NZ Canyoning Association, a 10% koha is suggested from the seller to the NZCA.

The Canyons

Canyoning around Hokitika is fairly wild compared to many locations around New Zealand.

The approaches can be long, steep and involve some serious bush-whacking. Many require fairly high levels of navigation, fitness and motivation.

In the canyons, bolted anchors are much less common, and water flows are generally higher than other regions.

They are a little more spread out than areas like Haast Pass or Arthurs Pass: come prepared to do a bit more driving from Festival HQ.

There are a handful of shorter, more moderate trips (Dorothy, Carew, Tiropahi, Ford, Lower Griffin) but most are full-day missions at grade 4 and upwards.

This is a long way of saying:  participants generally need to be operating at a higher level of skill, fitness and experience than any of the previous NZ Canyoning festivals

The weather & other things to do

The west coast is well known for its high-rainfall.   The prevailing westerly winds come straight off the ocean, and slam into the southern alps, dropping metres of rain each year on the west of the divide.

This high precipitation has created the incredible carved canyons surrounded lush rainforest which are among the most wild and challenging in the country.

Although annual rainfall is high, that doesn’t mean its always raining on the coast.  There’s plenty of weather windows that roll through: you just need to pick your timing for your adventures.

Luckily, there’s heaps of other stuff to do in the region.  When its too wet for canyoning, the area is paradise for paddling.  Check out PackraftingTrips.nz and Riverguide.co.nz for more information.

There’s plenty of mountain biking, including the West Coast Wilderness trail (4 easy days, or pick sections for daytrips) and the Paparoa Track (needs bookings unless youre a machine and do it in a single day).

Trout Fishing, Surfing, Hunting and climbing (if its dry, but canyons are still high). And if its really wet, there a loads of places to have a beer ;0)

So, we encourage you to come, hoping for the dry weather, but prepared for the wet.

A note about roads and severe weather.

It is worth noting, that the roads to Hokitika can be damaged/closed in severe weather events, which are not uncommon. If there’s weather on the coast, always check the NZTA Road closures map and be aware that severe weather can trap you in a certain town for a day or two.  Plan and prepare accordingly.

Pre-festival training courses

If you’re looking to brush up on your skills, several canyon guiding companies have indicated they can put on training immediately prior to the festival.

NZCA is not affiliated with any of these companies; all were given the chance to feature thier courses here, and are listed in alphabetical order.

Venue, accomodation & logistics

Festival HQ

Watch this space: Festival HQ will be in Hokitika township

Getting to Hokitika

Christchurch is the nearest gateway town for visitors outside the South Island.

Most people would fly to Christchurch then pick up a rental vehicle to drive 3hrs to Hokitika.

However, Hokitika does have a small airport connecting to Christchurch and a smaller selection of rental vehicles are available.

It is also possible to get busses and shuttles from Christchurch.

Food and other supplies

There’s plenty of restuarants, cafes and supermarkets in Hokitika.  Traditionally we provide some catering for one of the evening social events: watch this space for more information.

There’s car fuel available in town, sports and hunting store, but all specialised canyon gear should be brought from home.

Accommodation

It is your responsibilty to arrange your own accomodation.

There’s a range of options from camping, to Air BnB houses to motels and hostel, all within walking or a very short drive from festival HQ

Getting to the canyons

All of the canyons require a private vehicle to access.  Although you could turn up to the festival and ask nicely to get a ride with others, to avoid dissapointment we reccomend you arrange some partners and a seat in a vehicle before you get here.

We’ll create a festival whatsapp group to connect with other participants. Watch this space.
